Our
Provincial Squads Training Program is an elite one designed
to prepare Manitoba athletes and teams for such major
events as the Canadian Championships (Senior and Junior),
2003 Canada Winter Games, 2003 Western Canada Summer
Games and Western Canadian Championships. Age categories
in which we annually field provincial teams to the major
events are: men (open age), women (open age), junior
boys under 10, 12, 14, 17, 19 and 21 years and junior
girls under 10, 12, 14, 17, 19 and 21 years. These athletes
train year-round in the technical, tactical, physical
and psychological aspects of Table Tennis. Team practices
are held 2-4 times per week (depending on stage in training
plan) plus athletes must commit a further 1 night per
week to play in the Winnipeg Super League (Oct. -end
April). Some athletes, depending on their age and ability
level, are required to train a further 1-2x per week
on their own. Camps are also held several times a year
with durations of 1-4 days. Each year athletes are sent
to several "minor" tournaments in order to
prepare them for the "major" events. Athletes
may also be sent out of province to attend other joint
inter-provincial training camps as conducted by the
National Coaches or as conducted in cooperation with
other Provinces.
All Provincial Squad athletes have a chance to be
named to one of the 8 National teams and 2 feeder
programs. Players are named to the Squads each fall
based on both the results of the previous Canadian
Championships and the National rankings lists. The
Squad lists are updated each February. This intense
high performance program has in the past received
the fullest support of the M.T.T.A. and we try to
qualify as many Manitoba players as possible onto
these teams.
National Team athletes may benefit from extra camps,
competitions, etc. in order for them to strive towards
International excellence.
