One of the objectives of our Provincial Squads Training
Program is to place athletes on Canadian teams and
thus to have the C.T.T.A. try to develop them further
for international levels of play. The fact that the
MTTA now has athletes on various teams has meant that
the CTTA is selecting item for several of their athlete
development programs.
For funding purposes, the C.T.T.A. must achieve Top
16 results at the Olympic Games and/or World Championships.
The CTTA's high performance model traditionally has
always included a National training centre in Ottawa.
The first of these was the establishment, in addition
to maintaining the National Training Centre in Ottawa,
of Regional High Performance centres. These centres
were set up in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver
and, just last fall, Winnipeg.
The second initiative was the start up 3 seasons
ago of the A Division of the National Table Tennis
League: "The Butterfly Canada Cup". The
third major initiative was the start up of the youth
program entitled "Team 2008". All three
of these programs are designed to compensate for the
vast distances and geographical size limitations posed
by the Canadian reality: "we are a big country
with major distances between centres". All three
bring Canada's top senior and junior athletes together
on a regular basis for training and competition interactions.
These programs benefit all of Canada's elite players
as well as those of Manitoba.
